FRUSTRATION

I'm studying for the GRE.

How the hell am I supposed to know that 63/147 is equivalent to 3/7 off the top of my head????

Either I'm stupid or this is effing ridiculous.

I HATE fractions!!!!!!

[Edit: 46 minutes later - my brain is FRIED.  I'm going home.  Bah.]

Math, unless you're an engineer/accountant, seems pointless to me.

This might be a slightly annoying answer but actually attempting to be useful on THIS point...

Try and find a number that divides into BOTH the top and bottom figures...then see if there is another number that can divide into this. THat is the easiest way to do with without a calculator.

Goodluck! If you need help with math related stuff. xoxo

Boo math. I hated re-learning stuff I hadn't touched since high school. It's so demoralizing.

Telstaar, I totally didn't get that (I suck at math). Can you explain it again with an example?

I really have to wonder...what is the point of the GRE? You want to get a PsyD. I have trouble understanding how fractions will help you with that. :P

Hi Kara,

I loathe math with a passion aswell!! I tend to use a method similar to Telstaar when I don't have a calculator handy.

For example, take 63/147.

1.
Ask: What number divides into both the numerator and denominator?
3 divides into both (6+3=9 and 1+4+7=12. Both 9 and 12 are divisable by 3, thus proving that 3divides into both 63 and 147).

2.
Divide both 63 and 147 by 3.
63 divided by 3 = 21
147 divided by 3 = 49

3.
To further simplify the fraction, can you find a number that divides both into 21 and 49?
Yes - 7 divides into both
21 divided by 7 = 3
49 divided by 7 = 7

Thus, the final answer is 3/7

Best of luck on your test Kara :)

i hated studying for the gre and it was hard to make myself actually do it.

what worked best for me is just running through as many practice tests as possible and going over the ones i got wrong - until i got too frustrated and stopped before going crazy.

but we're all different...

good luck!

Hey hun,

Did the explanation another kind reader give make more sense?? If not, feel free to email and I'll help you out as much as you can. I like math, its comforting to me, so you may as well benefit from it!!!

Thanks R. I had no idea that you could add the digits of the number together like that! Very cool. Thanks, Telstaar, I think I get it now.

PS I still hate math though. Ugh.
